WakingUgly All Over Again
Melbourne pop/rock duo WakingUgly announced today their plans to complete the recording of their second five-track album by the end of this month.
The act’s lead singer and general manager, Lydia Gardner, will be finishing vocal tracks and mixing at Altona’s Airwaves studio with producer Michael Zammit.
Zammit produced the duo’s debut EP, Say Something Sweet, released last November under local independent label Future of Vintage (FOV) Records.
Since their 2010 debut, WakingUgly have attracted listeners from all over the globe who are fans of other international pop acts such as Katy Perry, Pink and Miley Cyrus and have also received high praise and five-star reviews of their work from industry professionals, both local and international.
In a review in Melbourne street magazine, Beat, Briony Jones said of the effort, “Say Something Sweet is pop as it hasn’t been done for a long time and it ultimately puts any mainstream version of the genre to shame – finally there is a band that can do the genre justice.” (Beat magazine, Issue 1244, pg96)
Gardner said that she hoped they would continue to get such positive reactions with the next five songs. “Every track on the first album had its own identity, and that is even more so the case with these ones. As with the first album, we’re trying to find that perfect balance between familiarity and uniqueness. We don’t want a bunch of songs that sound the same as each other, nor do we want to upset the listener by changing our overall sound too much from song to song. I think achieving that harmony has become our niche in a sense.”
Still in the midst of promoting their first album, WakingUgly have no immediate plans for their second release, preferring to focus on rehearsing their live show at this time, which is where fans will hear the new songs first.
Gardner’s co-writer and guitarist for WakingUgly, Darren Pace, revealed their plans to work with similar acts in non-traditional venues in the near future.
Pace stated, “We’re working on putting on small concerts, rather than doing regular pub gigs. We want to give our audiences a professional performance in a comfortable, all-ages environment.”
WakingUgly believe they set a standard for themselves at their EP release party held at Eurotrash Bar in town last November, a four hour event featuring “Gender-Bender” MC Queen La Diva, a special acoustic performance from up-and-comer Jo Dawson, free food and drinks as well as a raffle with an iPod Nano touch as first prize.
Although organizing an event of this level takes a lot more money and effort, Pace and Gardner are determined to make it work, in the hope of eventually gaining a reputation as one of Melbourne’s best live bands.
Gardner explained, “We had so many compliments regarding how much fun the release party was and how good the band looked and sounded. That’s because we used great equipment, skilled operators, and the entire event was well planned and executed. The last thing we want to do now is jeopardize that brilliant first impression we made by just doing some boring old gig in some boring old pub.”
Say Something Sweet is available on iTunes and other digital retailers.
Hard copy CDs are available on the band’s website www.wakingugly.com

We have entered the month of April which is very exciting for us! Not only is every day a reminder that the summer sun is on it's way, putting a spring in everyone's step, but also our 2nd album ‘Sugar Fix' will be released in the next few days!
All lucky Netherlanders get to hear it first on 15th April! In order to hit as hard as possible with the new album, Unique Records will be releasing it on June 10th 2011 everywhere else. So, if you do not live in the Netherlands, please accept our apologies for making you wait just a tiny bit more. However, we promise you, it is worth it.
You can of course pre-order the album at a few places online, just click here to do so!
Many of you will already know, from following us on facebook and twitter that we have been busy filming a new music video for the first single from the album, called ‘Capsize'!
Leading with a strong command from the drums and hand claps, Capsize takes you back to the days when wild dancing and big hair do's were commonly accompanied by high energy horn lines and surf guitar. This record doesn't hide behind anything, quite the contrary, it is raw, wide open and a new kind of old-fashioned fun!
We've been working on it since February, and we can't wait for you to see it! Tricky Art productions will be providing the finishing touches by the end of this week and we plan the single release campaign to fire up with these new visuals! Keep an eye on our online forums for more details over the next few days, you can't miss it, you won't miss it, we promise to be very loud about it!
It was a busy week last week for us as we prepared for the Netherland release. We did some brilliant shows in Holland such as Radio Rijnmond, much loved Giel Beelen on 3fm (ouch this was an early one, but we brought the force! POW! Click here to see.), internet magazine FaceCulture and then finally we put on a fierce show for the well respected Mijke's Middag show on Radio 6! It was a great couple of days in Holland promoting the album, and we are already getting some rave reviews! Laura returned home to perform a couple of the new songs at the legendary Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club in London and again was met with a whooping, fully applauding crowd! We couldn't wish for more with this new material, and we do hope it hits the mark for you!
Already we are receiving invites to perform in Switzerland, Netherlands, France and Germany... If you know a promoter/venue in your country who would like to book Laura Vane & The Vipertones, be a love and put them in touch! We're working on reaching the world, we just need a little help J
Laura & Vipertones x
A little note to the world ‘Get ready, we're hungry!'.
Uploaded a new song, recorded it a few weeks ago. It's a tribute to the folks way back down the musical line.
It was improvised and inspired by the prison chain gang songs which were recorded by great Mr. Alan Lomax
and his father. Since my life is not blue as it was years ago, and my sweet love Elisabeth is always there
to remind me of the good life, the lyrics ain't about the hardship the workers in that age and environment had to endure. This song is about every beginning of my week days, makin' some coffee for my lady before she awakes,, just plain and simple.
It is called Sweet Coffee.
Hope you'll like it.
