What is Labtones?

Labtones is the online network for independent artists and listeners. For listeners it is a place do discover new music, give ratings, become friends with other music lovers, communicate, exchange mixtapes, etc. Artists are given the opportunity to share their music, receive ratings from a group of critical music lovers, communicate with their fans, view statistics on their listeners, etc. Labtones is a place where the love for creative music comes first. We believe in the possibities of using new media to get that music from the right people to the right people!

Labtones is created as a promotional site for Independent artists worldwide. Our goal is to allow musicians the opportunity to promote their music to a global audience. We aim to Inspire, Educate, Empower & Entertain users of the Labtones website & to encourage more people to take up music making as either a means of recreation & enjoyment or as a career & business. We aim to create opportunities for collaborations by musicians free of the tyranny of distance, opening up new opportunities for musical influences & friendships thus leading to a greater understanding of the art.

How do I sign up as an artist?

Signing up to share your music through Labtones is absolutely FREE! You can make your own account by clicking on 'Create Account'. Next, make sure that you specify that you want to sign up as an artist and fill in your details. After the registration process you are a member of our network and you can start to edit your profile and upload your music!

How do I upload an avatar?

Every Labtoner (artist or listener) may choose a personal avatar. You can upload an image in the 'Avatar' tab on your 'edit profile' page. The JPG, PNG and GIF formats are supported, and images are automatically resized to the correct size (90x90 pixels). You may upload animated GIF images, but in that case make sure that they already have the correct size of 90x90 pixels otherwise the GIF will no longer be animated after upload. Of course, inappropiate images are not allowed to be used as avatars (or anywhere else on Labtones.com) and will be deleted by the administrators.

How do I upload my music?

In the tab 'music' on your 'edit profile' page you can upload up to five songs. Labtones.com supports all major audio compression formats, like MP3, Ogg Vorbis, AAC and WMA. However, make sure that each file does not exceed the maximum size of 10 MB. For each file you can also specify the song title on this page. It is possible to change the song title afterwards, or replace a song by another song.

After the uploading & converting process the song will appear in the audio player on your artist profile page. Listeners and other artists are now able to listen to the song, give feedback by sending you a note and rate the song on a scale from one to five stars.

For each song you are able to specify if registered users will be able to download the song, or are just allowed to listen to the song.

How do I upload videoclips?

Labtones supports embedded videos from Youtube. If you have a video clip for a song, or a live performance, you can go to the 'Videos' page on your 'edit profile' page and fill in the links to the youtube videos there. For each video you can add a short description if you want. The video(s) will then appear on your artist profile page.

How do I upload photos?

On the 'Photos' tab on your 'edit profile' page you can upload up to five photos. JPG and GIF image formats are supported. The photos will appear in a slide show on your artist profile page.

How do I post news?

If you have news about your band, you can navigate to the 'News' tab on your 'edit profile' page. Each post will have a title, and you can also add a small picture (JPG, GIF or PNG format). If you post news it will appear on your artist profile page and on the general news page of Labtones.com. In the 'News' tab on your 'edit profile' page you will find a list of old news you have posted on Labtones. You can delete posts or edit them by clicking on the corresponding title.

How do I change my password?

You can change your password through the 'Password' tab on your 'edit profile' page.

I forgot my password!

Don't worry if you've forgotten your password. You can receive an e-mail with your password if you follow the instruction on the 'login' page.

I get too much e-mail with notifications from Labtones.com!

If you don't like the e-mail notifications from Labtones.com you can disable them through the 'Notifications - Tooltips' tab on your 'edit profile' page. You can enable or disable each type of notification individually.

Why do you put advertisements on your website? That's not indie!

In order to be able to finance this music network we have to be a little less 'indie' sometimes. This means that you will see small banners or other types of advertisements on Labtones.com.

How do I listen to music?

You can listen to music of Labtones artists by navigating to their profile page. If the artist uploaded music, you will find a music player. Also, you can tune in to 'Labtones Radio' to listen to the best music our website has to offer.

How do I rate music?

If you want to keep track of your favourite tracks (or tracks you don't like!) you can give star rating (one to five stars) to them by clicking on the correspoding amount of stars next to the song title in the audio player. The ratings will be used to construct the LabCharts. The yellow stars are your personal ratings. The red rating stars are ratings of other users. You can change your personal ratings at any time.

What is the difference between red and yellow rating stars?

The red rating stars are ratings from other users. The yellow rating stars are your personal ratings. You can change a rating at any time.

How do I download music?

An artist can allow his/her/their fans to download particular songs. This means that you have to become a fan of an artist in order to download songs. If a song is downloadable, a download button will appear in the player on the artist's profile page.

Can I become 'LabFriends' with other artists?

Yes, you can become a 'LabFriend' with another artist by cliking on 'Become LabFriends with [artist]' on his/her/their profile page. When the other artist accepts you as a LabFriend the artist will show up in your list of LabFriends.

Can I become 'LabFriends' with a listener?

No, as an artist you cannot become LabFriends with a listener. However, listeners can become a 'LabFan' of you and your music by clicking on 'Become LabFan' on your profile page.

How do I communicate with other people on Labtones.com?

There are two ways to communicate with other people on Labtones.com: using 'Labnotes' (public) and using 'messages' (private). You can leave a note on the profile page of an artist or listener by typing a text and pressing the 'Leave a Labnote' button. The note will appear on the profile page and will be visible for everyone. If you want to send a personal message you can do so by navigating to your inbox and compose a new message.

Can I use bold and italic text on Labtones.com?

Yes you can! In order to make your text bold, place it in between [b] and [/b] tags: [b]bold text[/b]. Words can be made italic like this: [i]italic text[/i]. These tags work in labnotes, messages, news posts, etc.

How do I get a song in the LabCharts?

The official LabCharts reflect the top 100 highest rated songs on Labtones, as rated (with stars) by the artists and listeners. There is a minimum of five ratings, before a song can appear in the charts. Thanks to this system, the best music will automatically get the attention it deserves!

How do I get a song onto Labtones Radio?

Every song that has 4 stars or more will be played at the Radio. The 5 most voted songs that week will also be played on the Radio. You can also click on the 'Vote for Radio' button next to each songtitle in de Musicplayer.

I do not get e-mail from Labtones

If you don't get e-mail from us, then either the e-mailaddress while creating your account was wrong, or your e-mail is landed in the 'Unwanted E-mail' directory of the program you read your e-mail with. Check to see if the messages are there.

You can solve this problem by adding the e-mailaddress: noreply@labtones.com to your trusted contacts in your e-mail client.

How do I delete my profile?

Contact us at the contact page in the footer and we will delete.
